Stand up for nudity in Overland Park statue case
The Kansas City Star
(UPDATE: Mayor stands firm; statue stays.)
Oh, boy, now the courts might get involved in the semi-nude statue issue at the Overland Park Arboretum.
The American Family Association is hoping to get a grand jury to weigh in and eventually see whether the sculpture violates obscenity laws. Here’s the group’s posting.
Johnson County District Attorney Stephen Howe, fortunately, has already said that it’s difficult to prove something is obscene.
In addition, the statue haters are scheduled to meet with Overland Park Mayor Carl Gerlach. They hope the fact that several thousand people have signed their petitions - and the grand jury threat might be looming - will convince Gerlach and the City Council to remove the statue.
Here’s hoping Gerlach and the council stay strong and don’t give in on this issue.
And isn’t it a bit odd to be counting on the conservative forces on this city’s council to be standing up for not censoring art?
But let’s do it.
