Shooting worst imaginable for any father

Everyone could sympathize with the 44-year-old dad whose gun accidentally went off killing his 7-year-old son.

The tragic shooting occurred Saturday in a parking lot of a western Pennsylvania gun store. Joseph Loughrey of Sharpsville was getting into his truck when the 9 mm handgun fired accidentally, wounding Craig Allen Loughrey in the chest.

The boy died at the scene at Twigs Reloading Den about 60 miles north of Pittsburgh. The father told investigators he did not realize a bullet was still in the chamber of the gun.

Thank God and the NRA that this father had easy access to a firearm with which to protect his family… Oh, wait…

The incident is tragic, but TOTALLY avoidable. Guns are NOT toys or fashion accessories. Guns are not testosterone supplements. Guns are DEADLY WEAPONS — and should be treated as such. This is especially true of handguns, since they are so easily carried about where they can endanger family members.

Even the gun that “I thought was not loaded” would be unable to kill with a trigger-lock on while it is being transported. And, seriously, I doubt that Dad needed to be able to quickly defend himself against the roving criminal gangs in Sharpsville.

Once the bullet leaves the chamber, it is of no use to be heartbreakingly sorry.
