Leon Panetta was right to warn of a possible cyber-attack that could do harm to people and businesses in this country.

The secretary of defense spoke Thursday about the potential of foreign computer hackers disrupting transportation systems, the power grid, the government and financial networks. The New York Times reported on Panetta’s speech to the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York.

Such cyber-attacks used to be what scared people at the movies. However, Panetta said the U.S. is reacting to an increasing aggressiveness in such places as China, Russia, Iran and in militant groups.

The Pentagon is pushing for bills in Congress that will require new private sector standards to better safeguard against cyber-attacks. Panetta warned of a “cyber-Pearl Harbor that would cause physical destruction and loss of life, paralyze and shock the nation and create a profound new sense of vulnerability.”
