Santorum thinks Obama believes he knows what's good for you
If you’ve followed the Rick Santorum for president campaign, and maybe if you haven’t, you know that he’s opposed to homosexual marriage, abortion and birth control. Fair enough.
But he’s not just opposed to birth control for Catholics, he opposes it for everyone, as made clear in this quote:
“One of the things I will talk about, that no president has talked about before, is I think the dangers of contraception in this country. It’s not okay. It’s a license to do things in a sexual realm that is counter to how things are supposed to be.”
So ask yourself this question: If Rick Santorum were elected president, do you have any doubt that he would use the power of the presidency to stop homosexual marriage, ban all abortion and ban birth control…for everyone. Not just in Catholic institutions.
He has said publicly and often that he would return to the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy for homosexuals serving in the military, leaving no doubt whatsoever about his intentions.
Yet on the eve of his primary victories Tuesday, Mr. Santorum castigated President Obama. “He thinks he’s smarter than you,” Santorum said. “He thinks he’s someone who is a privileged person, who should be able to rule over you.” The former Senator went on to say that the president doesn’t listen to the people.
My reading of polls on these issues is that the a majority of the people, including a majority of Catholics, favor health insurance covering birth control, favor the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, support abortion rights (with reasonable restrictions) and even support homosexual marriage. It turns out that many Catholic institutions, such as DePaul University, already provide health insurance that covers birth control. Many states already require this coverage as well.
But you can find polls, and examples, to support almost any position you want, so let’s focus on the real issue: Elections have consequences.
There’s no doubt that President Obama has been quite successful, despite Republican filibusters, in implementing many of his campaign promises. That is precisely why Mr. Santorum views the president as someone who is able “to rule over you.”
When President Bush was in office, Democrats whined that he rammed things down their throats. Now that Mr. Obama is president, Republicans whine that he is ramming things down their throats.
Yup. That’s what people who seek and gain political power do.
So if you want to return to the golden era of no birth control, back alley abortions, persecution of homosexuals, and health insurance only for those who don’t need it, then go ahead and vote for Rick Santorum. Or just sit passively by and let those with passion for their position do the voting.
Elections are the only polls that count.

3 months, 1 week agoMr. Hunsucker, you’re correct that I’m not bothered by the passage of the the Affordable Health Care Act. There are aspects of it that I wish were stronger, and I don’t think it is going to reduce health care costs, but that’s another discussion. I think Obama achieved what presidents back to Truman, including Republicans like Nixon, were unable to do. As for November 6th, after the election happens, let the “cramming” begin, whoever wins!

3 months, 1 week agoAt least you are “fair & balanced” George…
Unfortunately, for both of us, Nov. 6 will not solve the problems… I am afraid it is going to take a Greece situation to force govt. to do less. With our national debt exceeding 100% of GDP that will not be that far off unfortunately….

3 months, 1 week agoTwo quotes from you, George…..each followed with a comment:
“So if you want to return to the golden era of no birth control, back alley abortions, persecution of homosexuals, and health insurance only for those who don’t need it, then go ahead and vote for Rick Santorum.”
That sentence blends irrational conclusions based on interpretations of Santorum comments to a most extreme and virtually impossible outcome. It will not influence a single individual who reads it because it is…..in brief….wildly distorting.
I would offer a similar sentence about Obama but it would be edited out of the post.
“I think Obama achieved what presidents back to Truman, including Republicans like Nixon, were unable to do.”
May be right…. he oversaw, after campaigning on precisely the opposite commitment, the most partisan and reprehensibly non transparent congress in American history. He reneged on more campaign commitments than all those you mention and remains more duplicitous than Nixon.

3 months, 1 week agoThe point of course is that Santorum REALLY knows what’s good for us. Expect if not legislation, at least lectures on the evils of birth control and homosexuality. And like Brownback’s Kansas, expect a somewhat creepy obsession with abortion laws.

3 months, 1 week agoMr. Groenhagen, you may be right that Mr. Santorum wouldn’t try to ban contraceptives for everyone. But I think he knows that he would lose a lot of votes if he said he would try to do it, so he makes a “pro choice” statement with respect to contraceptives. But it’s clear to me that he sees contraception as morally wrong, just as he sees all abortion as morally wrong, and therefore I believe he would do everything in his power to ban contraception if he were elected. I You say he wouldn’t, I say he would, and that’s about as much evidence as either of us can bring to the argument until he’s given the opportunity to play his cards.

3 months, 1 week agoHe is a theocratic nut.
That does not mean that he cannot do or say some intelligent, compassionate things. But it means that he has no more concept of religious liberty than the ayatollahs of Iran do.
Rick probably does not actually want to hang gays as in Iran — but he was A-OK with putting them in jail. That is where he wants to put any doctor who performe an abortion — and apparently any store owner who sells condoms. (The wages of lust is kids, right?)
To serve in our government, you must accept that citizens often have the Constitutionally-protected right to do what your church teaches is absolutely morally wrong and sinful. Rights that cannot be over-ridden by legislation. Otherwise, you cannot in good conscience take the oath to defend that Constitution.
@ 1710, an 18 year old Scottish student was choked to death at the end of a rope for the crime of blasphemy — sort of what Iran does today. It was against that sort of crazy religious crap that our Founding Fathers erected a wall of rights — separating direct religious interference from some important parts of government and life.
The difference between the USA and Iran is not that we are “Christian”. It is that we recognize the Rights of Man — and leave the worship of God to individual consciences, not hangman’s nooses.

We have to paint Santorum since he could beat the big 0. Of course a monkey could beat the big 0, but I digress…….
