Romney agrees: Obama foreign policy mostly good

All of the “insta-polls” I’m seeing are calling the debate for Obama, but I think Romney helped himself tonight with everyone except the Republican neocon contingent.

Romney showed he has a nuanced grasp of foreign affairs. He can speak knowledgably about the dynamics of the Middle East. Somewhat strangely, he sounded most knowledgeable when he was agreeing with Obama. And when they got right down to it, Romney ended up agreeing with Obama most of the time — even when he tried to sound like he disagreed.

Obama spoke like he was confident about his foreign policy. And why not, since Mitt agreed with him so much? Surprisingly, Romney let Obama off the hook on Libya.

The takeaway? Obama is a successful foreign policy president, and Romney showed the calm and collected characteristics that Americans want their president to display on the national stage. I don’t see tonight as a game-changer, unless Romney inadvertently opened up an ongoing riff on his opposition to the auto bailout.
