Post-debate parallax view
The post-VP-debate reviews by The Star’s largely liberal-leaning Editorial Board members are predictable. Most scored Vice President Joe Biden as the winner.
Yet when I last checked the Star’s own on-line post-debate poll on Friday there were more than 7,200 responses, of which roughly 55 percent chose GOP nominee U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan as the winner versus roughly 45 percent for Biden.
So with the charges of lies and half-truths flying from both sides, who are you going to believe? Granted, The Star’s on-line poll is self-selecting. Respondents have to take the time to go online and vote; it is not a random “scientific” poll of area debate-watchers, which might have a different result.
However, one might think that the Star’s followers would tend to share the Editorial Board’s generally liberal bent. Consequently, the discrepancy between the poll results and the opinions of the Star’s editorial writers is interesting. What it suggests to me is that maybe, just maybe, more Star readers are starting to wake up and see that the really big lie in this 2012 presidential campaign and in last night’s debate. It is the lie that Biden and Obama and our own Sen. Claire McCaskill have been living and perpetrating during the past four years. That lie – and it is the only one that really matters in this election – is the grand illusion that their socialist-leaning “forward” is the right track for America.
In truth, their “forward” is really a slide backward for this country. Backward economically; backward militarily; and backward socially – just as it has been for every other developed country in the world that has gone down this unsustainable, tax-and-spend, government-take-all Obama/Biden road.
Since their election, Biden and Obama have dodged every important issue: our failed tax system; our failed education system; our failed immigration policies; government waste and fraud; the increasing threat of Iran; and, most importantly, our battered economy and the persistently high jobless rate.
Instead, they have focused on expanding entitlements and increasing government control to support their political ends. After four years of “Hope And Change”, America is still stuck in the current administration’s liberal ideological rut, just as Biden was on Thursday night.
The solution is not doubling down on the last four years of failure. The solution is a new vision and new leadership for this country, not just another clever Obama/Biden slogan that really means the opposite of what it promises.

For the same reason, Biden’s reaction to Ryan was the correct one: “Oh, come on, kid, just amswer the question. Quit lying and dodging. Everybody can tell you’re saddled with something dumb to defend.”
