People in the Northeast area are breathing a sigh of relief after police recently arrested a man in the serial killings of two prostitutes.

Derek Richardson, 27, of Kansas City, North, was arrested during a traffic stop in the Northland. A tip on Valentine’s Day brought the case to an end in the slayings of Tamara R. Spaks, 40, and Nicoleone M. Reed, 24.

Each was killed in sex acts and left by gravel roads in the Northland, The Kansas City Star reports. The case brings relief to the Northeast area, which has long had an unwanted history of prostitution along Independence Avenue.

People in the community of older homes have fought to end the illicit action as they have tried also to revive the area with new businesses and restaurants. The arrest has to be good for everyone and serve as a signal for johns and pimps to keep out and prostitution to go elsewhere.

I don’t know anyone involved in this case. And I hope the police got the guy who is responsible so that the senseless killings can stop. But, to say this brought the case to an end is to presume guilt at the time of arrest. That is not how our system is supposed to work.

Don’t let your guard down. Everyone needs to continue to be wary, until we are sure they got the right guy, and that there isn’t another guy who takes his place.
