More Star recommendations in Kansas legislative races

Kansas City Star Editorial

None

The Star’s Kansas legislative recommendations Wednesday omitted two important, contested races for the House.

In our best equal-opportunity manner, though, we left off one from each party, the District 17 Republican race in Johnson County and the District 36 Democratic race in Wyandotte County.

These races feature well known candidates, one who had the courage to make the politically tough decision to back the sales tax increase this year, another known for her role in helping transform Kansas City, Kan. Our recommendations:

Republican

District 17:

Incumbent Jill Quigley’s background as a nurse is an asset as health care questions arise yearly in the legislature, and her record shows that she understands economic development is far more complicated than simply cutting taxes. She stands up for Johnson County’s best interests, and she certainly deserves a shot at the general election. Her opponent is Kelly Meigs of Lenexa, a paraprofessional in the Blue Valley School District. The winner will face Democrat Bryan Cox.

Democrat

District 36:

Kathy Wolfe Moore is convinced that the Kansas City, Kan., focus on economic development has been vital to keeping her city afloat in this recession. She’s also convinced that focus has to be the priority for Kansas. As she notes, there is no greater economic development tool than a high quality public education. Further cutting school funds, she notes, might be easy in the short term, but would have long-lasting downsides. Her opponent is Ronald Witt, a Kansas City, Kan., retired chiropractor. The winner will face Earl Freeman, a Kansas City, Kan., real estate developer.
