Mizzou attacks vulgar MIZ-ZOU chant
KU basketball coach Bill Self knows the vulgar chants will be coming Saturday when his basketball team plays Missouri in Columbia.
But Self said Thursday he doesn’t think the epithets will bother his club, mostly because it’s going to be so loud at Mizzou Arena.
Still, Missouri officials responsibly are trying to tamp down the possibility that a vulgar variation of the tiresome “MIZ-ZOU!” chant will be heard during the nationally televised broadcast. MU officials realize this would be embarrassing for the university.
Here’s a video instructing students on how to chant MIZ-ZOU, but not the vulgar alternative - MIZ-@$^#KU - at KU’s players and fans. Missouri player Jarrett Sutton is the “host.”
From the statement accompanying the video:
“In the past, some fans have gotten caught up in the spirit of the game and have reworded our MIZ-ZOU chant with vulgarities. True Tigers and the Mizzou Alumni Association urge all students and fans not to alter our university’s traditional chants and cheers for this, or any, game. Represent Mizzou with pride and class- Good Game, Great Fans. GO TIGERS!”
MU could really make the students pay for their chant. At another KU-MU basketball game in a recent year, when the students were spewing the vulgar chant, the arena announcer told them not to do it or Missouri would be assessed a technical.
That would get the attention of the students unless, of course, one of the teams had a big lead at the time and the game was already out of hand.

3 months, 1 week agoMaybe Jarrett Sutton can also host a video instructing The Star reporters to use “Border Showdown” rather than “Border War.” One of the few things Lew Perkins got right was this quote: “We feel that in the aftermath of September 11, 2001, and the ensuing events around the world, it is inappropriate to use the term ‘war’ to describe intercollegiate athletics events.” Amen.
On second thought, never mind. It’s hopeless. Each school’s fans will continue to hurl obscenities at the other school, and The Star will continue to refer to the “Border War.” On the bright side, at least this will become less frequent when MU and KU quit playing each other.

I’ve been writing about this silly “Border War” nomenclature for years.

3 months, 1 week agoYeah right! It is and will always be the “Border War”. Unless you think that the hatred between Missouri and Kansas started during the “American Civil Showdown” from 1861-1865.
In fact, I am offended by people who oppose the term “Border War”. Stop trying to limit journalistic free expression. The schools may have stopped referring to it as such, but the writers who truly understand the hatred between the fanbases know what it really is…a WAR
