Missouri Republicans' war on workers

First labor unions had to contend with renewed efforts this year to turn Missouri into a right to work state.

Now a Republican Missouri lawmaker wants to go after some employees’ unemployment benefits. Sen. Will Kraus, a Lee’s Summit Republican, has a bill that was endorsed by the Senate this week that would make it more difficult for employees who were fired for sleeping on the job or for missing work to collect unemployment benefits.

The bill would expand workplace “misconduct” and protect businesses from liability, The Associated Press reports. Employers would have more freedom to fire workers who aren’t up to snuff.

The Republican dominated legislature is giving labor a hard way to go this session.
