KU haters got their wish

Hmmm, couldn’t find much about the KU-Kentucky basketball game in today’s Star, but it appears the Jayhawks fell short in Monday’s NCAA championship game.

Congratulations to the Kansas athletes on an incredible accomplishment.

As for all those KU haters out there - yes, I know they exist in Columbia, Manhattan, etc. - at least you got your wish:

Kansas is just the SECOND best basketball team this year in the country, thanks to Monday’s defeat.

Still, that’s better than being knocked out in the first round (Missouri) or the second round (Kansas State) in the tournament.

Finally, my favorite quotation from Jason Hancock’s Star story today about Columbia fans cheering on Kentucky’s victory:

“For me, it’s not really the players or even the school. It’s the Kansas fans. They’re irrational and obnoxious,” said Jared King, a Missouri alum. “We live, die and breathe Missouri athletics, but as soon as we lose, we focus on rooting against Kansas.”

Read that last sentence again, and you’ll see why it brings a smile to the faces of KU fans.

As opposed to this video which was actually promoted by the KU Alumni Association. The self righteousness of many KU fans, including yourself, is what makes them so easy to root against.

Yael, what can you say to Jon other than touche, haha.

Was that an isolated incident up on Omaha? Or, maybe it was a group of MU grads trying to make KU look bad.

Or, was it a large example of the poor behavior you described?

This so-called rivalry is toxic, and I can’t wait for it to be over.

I went to Notre Dame, so I know a bit about sports rivalries.

In a true rivalry, you should want your rival to do well when they are not playing you — unless your own ranking is at stake. It makes you look better — whether you beat your rival or lose to them — because it makes you look better.

Rationally, MU fans should have cheered for KU — because then they would be able to brag that MU had actually beaten the eventual national champions. And KU had learned from MU’s foolish lack of respect for the team that upset them — which was also true.

So, maybe this Border War really is toxic. Maybe there is too much actual history mixed in with the athletic rivalry. I don’t know of any other sports rivalry poisoned by a history of mutual massacres dating back to the Civil War.

KU had a great season. So did MU. Maybe it is time to stop using a bunch of talented kids as surrogates for Quantrell and the Jayhawkers. Maybe it is time to give this rivalry a rest.

Phil, I have always been amused when either mu or ku ridicules the other. If you say they other is horrid, what does that make you when you lose to them? Funny.
