KC sewer rates could soar even higher if bonds fail
The Kansas City Star
In St. Louis, voters in June are being asked to approve $945 million in bonds to make federal required improvements.
But if the bonds fail, sewer rates will have to more than double this year to do the work on a pay-as-you-go basis, bond boosters say.
Now, look at KC, which has unveiled $500 million sewer bond issue for Aug. 7 for federally mandated upgrades.
If the bonds fail here, sewer rates may quickly more than double, too, to get the work started.
That could turn out to be a powerful reason to vote for the bonds in St. Louis and in Kansas City, too.
I’m hoping to get more exact numbers from Water Services Department in the near future, certainly before the campaign for KC’s bonds revs up.
