KC on list of least peaceful metro areas
To be honest, the Kansas City area actually ranks a little better than I would have expected on this interesting list of most peaceful regions in the United States.
The KC area comes in 46th out of 61 ranked areas.
We’re ahead of some of the usual suspects, including bottom-feeders Detroit, Miami and Baltimore, as well as Houston, Philadelphia, Oakland and Orlando, which is right behind KC in 47th place.
But we’re also behind a lot of other areas, including St. Louis at 37th place.
The “most peaceful” area is Cambridge-Newton-Framingham in Massachusetts, with others in the top 10 including Seattle, Minneapolis and Salt Lake City.
Notably, this list provides yet another reason that suburban neighbors of Kansas City ought to care a great deal about the future of the largest city in the area. That’s because this ranking is a regional one - it includes Johnson County, for example.
And while crime and its associated evils are abnormally and fortunately low in Johnson County, the entire region gets a black eye from the overall crime rate and other public-safety related concerns in this metropolitan area.

Dear Mr. Abouhalkah: Yes, KCMO has a most serious crime problem—a problem that the local political class largely ignores. We are at 126 homicides in the nearly twelve months since Funkhouser left office—compared to 98 in the last twelve months of his tenure as mayor. I would respectfully suggest the crime situation as a worthy topic for both “Ruckus” and “KC Week”. Take care. Sincerely and Respectfully, Ernest Evans
