Kansas City is on the right track in trying to better manage warm-weather, street clogging athletic events.

Anyone who has been stuck in traffic while hundreds of slow runners, walkers or bikers cross know that something has to be done to keep people in those fundraising events from seriously costing others time and money. The City Council today will consider moving the events from the responsibility of public works to the parks department and increasing permit fees from $50 to $100.

It would be encouraging for the events to occur in Kansas City area parks to limit traffic disruptions. Also, instead of bumping the permit fee up to $100, the council should consider making it $1,000.

Motorists would appreciate that people have paid for the privilege to take over the streets.
