The John Dorsey honeymoon begins with Chiefs fans
The Chiefs fans are excited. Check.
New general manager John Dorsey and head coach Andy Reid are saying the Chiefs are going to be winners. Check.
(Just give them time. Check.)
Owner Clark Hunt is being praised for his decisive leadership. Check.
And the media are reporting all kinds of positive stories about how great everything’s going to be in the coming years under the new leadership. Check.
Wow. Sounds just like 2009 again at Arrowhead Stadium.
You remember those days, right?
In fact, it was exactly one year ago today that the Chiefs introduced Scott Pioli to the Kansas City community as their new savior. I mean, general manager.
Hunt was lauded for coming out of his father’s shadow as the Chiefs owner. Pioli was lauded as one of the finest football minds in the NFL. New coach Toddy Haley was lauded for being a fiery leader.
Pioli and Haley did just fine the first two years. The Chiefs even went to the playoffs in their second year.
But you do remember what happened after that, right, including the horrendous 2-14 just-concluded season?
Haley got fired in 2011, the fans got angry in 2012, the planes carrying signs demanding that Pioli and coach Romeo Crennel be fired circled Arrowhead, and Hunt finally acted, jettisoning both of those men.
So as most Chiefs fans are doing now, I’m crossing my fingers that John Dorsey and Andy Reid will be fine human beings, great leaders and big winners.
Kansas City needs that kind of winner to keep getting people out to the publicly subsidized stadium, after all.
I wouldn’t want all that tax money going to waste on a mostly empty sports complex.
Check.
