Hooray for the new Corner Restaurant

Talk about good news: The Corner Restaurant is coming back.

It was a mainstay of Westport life after opening in 1980, when I lived in the area. Lines often were out the door, with people waiting for the good, old-fashioned comfort food, especially at breakfast.

But the Corner, at a prime location at 4059 Broadway, lost many of its customers over the years and closed in late 2009. Still, a pretty good run for a restaurant.

Now, Michael Pfeifer and Dawn Slaughter say they are going to reopen it. Can they recapture the magic that once was the Corner Restaurant?

According to The Star, “They are further remodeling the restaurant, giving it an “industrial farmhouse” décor with exposed beam ceilings and original brick walls for a relaxed artsy atmosphere….”

The Star once said the Corner “reminded some people of Edward Hopper’s diner painting come to life.” Its former names included the Tempter Grill, the Iron Kettle, It’s a Beautiful Day Cafe, and the Golden Temple Consciousness Cookery.
