Here's what is really obscene in Johnson County

A group of Johnson County residents wants a grand jury to determine if the semi-naked statue at the Overland Park Arboretum is obscene.

I have another idea.

How about having a grand jury look into something that’s really obscene in Johnson County, something that actually affects the pocketbooks of hundreds of thousands of residents.

Let’s get the courts involved in whether the cities and the state of Kansas are properly giving away millions upon millions of dollars in taxpayer subsidies to selected private companies. (Here’s just one news story about the latest example.)

Now that’s something worth getting excited about.

Asking for a grand jury in a case over whether a statue is obscene (by the way, it’s not) is a big waste of time. Or at least a whole lot worse use of time than trying to get a grand jury to look into the obscene tax-break policies being followed in Johnson County right now.

Is something illegal going on with these cities and their decisions?

I don’t know. But it would be great idea to have a grand jury look into the matter.

As usual, art is in the eye of the beholder. I concider nude pictures of women, in adult magazines, art. But does it mean that, porn should be sold at the local walmart? I think it would be a good idea but, others would disagree.

Let the citizens of Overland Park have a debate on what is appropiate for viewing by children. If the citizens tinks obsene, then move the statue to a spot where, children can’t see it.
