Fish kill at Blue Springs Lake serious business

Let’s hope the Missouri Department of Conservation comes up with answers fast for the mysterious fish kill at Blue Springs Lake in recent weeks.

Authorities reported that as many as 10,000 carp have died in the lake. The cause apparently is specific to that fresh-water species in the man-made lake in eastern Jackson County. The bass, crappie, catfish and bluegill in the lake have not been affected.

Officials said there appeared to be nothing wrong with the water that people use for fishing and boating. They also told The Kansas City Star that fish diseases are not transmissible to people.

But until the test results come back, people would be right to trust their instincts and exercise caution.
