Emanuel Cleaver's biggest pulpit

I just watched a video of Congressman Emanuel Cleaver’s speech to the Democratic National Convention and “the rev,” as we know him in Kansas City, was in rare form.

Cleaver, the former mayor of Kansas City, is a United Methodist minister, and his time in the pulpit served him well this evening. He had all of his audience on their feet and his inspirational message had some in tears.

Cleaver is a wordsmith, and he had some fine lines like this one, when talking about the rancor in Washington: “This must change, because just as bees cannot sting and make honey at the same time, members of Congress cannot simultaneously make passionate enemies and expect political progress.”

And this one: “Continue to speak of hope to the American people, because it is impossible for hope to overdraw its account in God’s bank.”

I only regret that Cleaver did not regale the crowd in Charlotte with one of his vintage parables that sound biblical but aren’t actually in the Bible. But if his purpose was to rally the troops, it was a great speech.

As of 9:00 today, God is in the Democratic platform, making Rev Cleaver more relevant than ever to the party.

It is now main stream OK to mix religion, country, and party together.

    God bless America.
