Cultural district for downtown Lawrence? Plah-eeeze!

It would be a stretch to promote downtown Lawrence as a cultural district.

Yet, that’s what’s being proposed. The Associated Press reports that the designation is to improve organizations’ chances to receive grants.

The hope also is it would get the city to spiff up lighting and sidewalks. Downtown also could benefit from more foot and bicycle paths linking historic, arts, natural and cultural heritage sites.

It seems as if the downtown could do better designating for “cultural purposes” which places its student-heavy population could frequent for domestic or imported beers. The city could even put up signs showing which places offer local microbrews and which bars gravitate to designated countries’ imported beers and that doesn’t include Budweiser Inbev.
