Count on the Afghan government to go the wrong way
The government in Afghanistan is taking the wrong step by turning to Pakistan in peace talks with the Taliban.
McClatchy Newspapers reports that Pakistan would replace the United States in arranging direct talks. The United States would have a reduced role in the peace process.
This step occurs as the U.S. continues to find and kill Taliban and al-Qaida fighters in Pakistan hideouts. It also arises amid a growing distrust between Afghan President Hamid Karzai and the Obama administration.
Turning to Pakistan to lead the peace process is not a winning way to end the war successfully by 2014 or 2015.
