The “old world” of Northeast Kansas City will get to meet the “new” at the free Columbus Day Social on Saturday.

The Northeast Area traditionally had been where Italian immigrants had settled in Kansas City. The 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. gathering at the American Sons of Columbus will bring to life the community’s rich Italian culture.

However, the Northeast has changed with immigrants being resettled in one of Kansas City’s oldest neighborhoods from Southeast Asia, Africa, Central America, South America and the Middle East. Instead of being largely Catholic, people who call the Northeast home are Muslim, Buddhist and Baha’i and their places of worship are nearby.

The cultures, restaurants and grocery stores catering to the different communities in the Northeast are constantly blending with the people. The event Saturday will be a new opportunity for sharing.
