Call Texas' bluff: Go ahead, secede
The Kansas City Star
Clint Eastwood goofed up the Republican National Convention last year, talking to an empty chair, pretending it was President Barack Obama.
But Obama could have used an Eastwood-like movie line similar to “Go ahead, make my day” when confronted with a petition asking that Texas be allowed to secede from the United States.
Texas is one of many states with petitions seeking to secede after Obama won re-election in November. The “we’re outta here” sentiment fits the tea party mantra of “take our country back.”
When the re-taking the presidency didn’t happen at the ballot box in November, people decided to go to secession extremes. If people knew their history, they’d realize that was tried in the 1860s when another president from Illinois occupied the White House.
It didn’t end well for the South.
The White House turned down the petition from Texas without any Clint Eastwood-like drama.
