Brownback's abortion fetish costs taxpayers
Gov. Sam Brownback is angry, it appears, that some groups are suing the state to stop its over-the-top effort to reduce legal abortions in Kansas.
I’d think most Kansas taxpayers would be equally angry that Brownback and the ultra-conservative Legislature have gone out of their way to pick fights with the pro-abortion forces in the state.
That’s going to cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars as the court cases wind their way through the courts. And rather than using state-paid lawyers already on the public dime, Brownback and Co. are funneling public dollars to private law firms to do the legal work.
What did Brownback and the Legislature think the organizations were going to do? Simply sit back and let abortions be, essentially, outlawed in Kansas?
That’s not going to happen.
You don’t even have to be an abortion supporter to be puzzled by Brownback’s behavior and that of the legislators.
If they really had wanted to crack down on abortion, they could have held a more thoughtful process of looking at how to hold clinics responsible for the conditions in their facilities - to take one example of a lawsuit filed against the state.
Instead, the state rushed the new rules through, then rushed the process of inspections through, then rushed the decision to try to shut down the clinics.
All in all, it’s been a costly and shoddy performance by Brownback and the Legislature.
