Akin vs. Priebus: Candidate blasts GOP leader

The Missouri U.S. Senate race got some extra attention today. That’s what happens when GOP candidate Todd Akin keeps going rogue on his party.

Just minutes ago, campaign manager Perry Akin released a heated message aimed at Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican National Committee.

Reince Priebus’ comments are extremely disappointing. He claims the mantle of freedom, liberty and the good of America, but this betrays his apparent personal vendetta against Todd Akin. He is putting party power and political games ahead of the good of the country.”

Wait, what is the Akin campaign talking about?

This.

Watch, and you’ll see that Priebus basically restates his contention that Akin needs to get out of the race so a “stronger” candidate can run against Democrat Claire McCaskill this November.

But his money quote is what really irked the Akin campaign.

Priebus is asked whether the GOP would rethink its strategy of not helping Akin, and he answers no.

He can be tied (with McCaskill), we’re not going to send him a penny.”

Akin will, of course, milk his us vs. the GOP establishment as long as possible - as long as he stays in the campaign, that is.

Whether this will help or hurt Akin, of course, won’t be known until some more polls come out.

I hate to call the Chairman of the Republican Party a liar, but if Akin has a chance to win, Mr. Priebus, Mr. Rove, Messers Koch, and everyone else on the Republican side will give him millions to gain a Republican seat. It does not matter that he may be what one leader said, “How do you reason with an idiot”. At least he is the right party’s elected idiot.

Hope Akin keeps insisting on making his voice heard; each is a dissonant reminder of the worst parts of his party’s platform (largely adopted at the convention, though sans the completely medically inaccurate ignorance spewed by Akin last week).
