After the election, Benghazi scandal will explode
The Kansas City Star
The Obama administration will probably succeed in keeping the lid on the Benghazi scandal until Tuesday, but after that the lid will blow. This is rapidly coming to a boil.
To recap: Fox reported late last month that CIA people in Benghazi were ordered to “stand down” when they requested permission to help repel the attack on the consulate. They went anyway.
Later, the annex housing the CIA team came under attack. It is from there that doomed CIA contractor Tyrone Woods radioed for the help that it appears someone higher up denied.
Now Fox has made public a secret cable sent weeks ago to the Office of Secretary of State complaining of poor security and concluding that the Benghazi consulate would be unable to hold out against a “coordinated attack.” The cable said known terrorist groups were training and operating in the area.
Why did no help reach the beleaguered CIA people? Why didn’t the administration boost security after the cable warning of terrorist groups in the area? Why did Obama and others cling so long to the fiction that the attack grew out of a spontaneous protest? More to the point, did someone knowingly leave these people to die, despite a real-time video of the attack?
The Washington Post’s David Ignatius reasons that even if military assets were in the area, as some reports suggest, it may not have been wise to bomb attackers assaulting the CIA annex: “Given the uproar in the Arab world, this might have been the equivalent of pouring gasoline on a burning fire.”
Perhaps so. But if there are good reasons why no help came for Tyrone Woods and the others, then let’s hear them.
Obama has said that he was made aware of the attacks as they happened and issued a “directive” — an order — to “make sure that we are securing our personnel and doing whatever we need to do.” But did he really issue such an order, and if so why was it not obeyed?
This administration is stonewalling and covering up.
We’re left with the anger of Woods’s father, who said in a TV apperance, “Whoever it was that was in that room watching that video of my son dying, their cries for help, their order ‘Don’t help them at all, let them die’ … you have the blood of my son, you have the blood of an American hero on your hands. I don’t know who you are, but one of these days the truth will come out.”
The picture may change once the facts become known. Right now, there’s a tremendous information vacuum. But right now this looks like gross dereliction of duty by someone high up in the chain of command.
