I won't eat, drink or bowl here

By Yael T. Abouhalkah, Kansas City Star Editorial Page columnist

Nine KC businesses have been added to my list of places that don't deserve my money.

They are the business that want to continue to expose their employees and customers to the harm caused by smoking.

Here's the sticker shock on your new sewer rates

By Yael T. Abouhalkah, Kansas City Star Editorial Page columnist

I have a copy of KC's possible new sewer rates to help pay for the city's proposed $2.5 billion or so repair bill. The rates would almost quadruple bimonthly bills -- from $37 now to $131 -- by 2021. (That would be $790 a year for sewer service alone.) Now for the really bad news.

Voter fraud -- just another Bush scare tactic

Denise Tiller, Midwest Voices Panelist 2008

Over the last few months, I've noticed many people around here getting all worked up about alleged instances of massive voter fraud. I've always asked, "where's the proof?" Finally, NEWSWEEK has answered the question, "there isn't any."

Kudos to the KCK School District

By Christian Dashiell, Midwest Voices Panelist 2008

I was encouraged today by the story on B4 of The Star that explained how the Kanas City, Kan., School District will bolster eligibility requirements for extra curricular activities. While students will have to have at least a 2.0 GPA, they must also make sure they have no F's on their report card as well.

Scott McClellan's latest briefing a devastating shot at George Bush

By Barb Shelly, Kansas City Star editorial board columnist

Has ever an administration had so many high-profile defectors turn against it in such a public way as George Bush's?

To the list that includes Paul O'Neill, the former treasury secretary; Richard Clarke, the former counterterrorism chief; and the ubiqitous Matthew Dowd, chief strategist for President Bush's 2004 campaign, we now add Scott McClellan, former White House press secretary.

Abouhalkah's column: Animosity levels rising at City Hall

By Yael T. Abouhalkah, Kansas City Star Editorial Page columnist

Political backstabbing is on the rise as an inexperienced mayor, unproven City Council and savvy city manager battle for power at City Hall.

Thursday's editorial: Poor leadership plagues South Africa

The horrifying violence against foreigners that has left at least 50 dead in South Africa is a disturbing omen of instability on the African continent.

Like Kenya, which experienced even more extensive violence this year, South Africa is an emerging economic and political model for neighboring countries. Unrest and bloodshed inside either of those nations bodes poorly for stability elsewhere.

Thursday's editorial: Closely examine green solutions to KC's sewer problems

Kansas City should be aggressive and fiscally sensible as it works to better handle stormwater and to limit sewage overflows into local waterways.

The city ought to pursue “green” options that include rain gardens, rooftop gardens, streetscaping and greenway corridors. All can help absorb heavy rains and reduce the volume of water pouring into aging stormwater and sewer lines.

Sebelius and her pal Dr. Tiller

By Ross Balano, Midwest Voices Columnist 2008

Photographs were released Wednesday showing Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius with Dr. George Tiller at what was called a “lavish secret party” for Tiller, his staff and other abortion doctors at the governor’s mansion.
