Funkhouser goes to Washington -- and makes good sense

By Yael T. Abouhalkah, Kansas City Star Editorial Page columnist

Mayor Mark Funkhouser was in Washington on Thursday to tell Congress about the need to repair the nation's infrastructure. Hey, it's not as interesting as the turmoil surrounding wife Gloria Squitiro but it's still important stuff.

Save Anheuser-Busch becomes beer-guzzlers' cry. But why?

By Yael T. Abouhalkah, Kansas City Star Editorial Page columnist

Missouri Gov. Matt Blunt and others are speaking up against the proposed takeover of Anheuser-Busch by InBev, a Belgian-Brazilian company. But what are the politicians going to do? Give A-B large tax breaks to stay in St. Louis? And will shareholders really turn down a $46 billion bid?

Barack Obama creates a holding pen for smears

By Barb Shelly, Kansas City Star editorial page columnist

I've just visited the Obama campaign's new web site, www.fightthesmears.com.

It's not exactly a web designer's dream, and some of the "smears" are old news. ("Sen. Obama is not a Muslim." Got it. If he was, he wouldn't have gotten in so much trouble because of his Christian now ex-pastor.)

Denise Tiller, Midwest Voices 2008

I'm having a hard time understanding why women who supported Hillary Clinton would even consider voting for McCain. I know they have a right to be disappointed. I'd love to see a woman president and in any other year, Mrs. Clinton would've had a lock on the nomination. Still, it's important to be adult about this. When your candidate loses the primary, you should cast your vote for the person who best represents your candidate's views, not the person who is the polar opposite.
